BC Hydro's ability to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with First Nations depends on clear, consistent policies and procedures. BC Hydro does this by identifying existing and emerging issues, developing policies to address them and communicating these policies to BC Hydro staff, First Nations and the provincial government.
This process not only focuses the company's mandates and enables decision-making, it also reinforces BC Hydro's position on, and commitment to, issues of importance to First Nations.
As a Crown corporation with a commercial business mandate, BC Hydro's actions must reflect overall government policy. BC Hydro's Aboriginal Relations Department (ARD) participates in a number of government processes at the First Nation, provincial and federal levels, which ensures we have input on initiatives that may impact Hydro's business or its relationships with First Nations.
Through working closely with government, we have input into the development of provincial policies and strategies and are given the opportunity to respond to proposed government actions.
