First Nations peoples are members of a large number of distinctly different and well-defined cultures and societies. For instance, the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation is as different from the Okanagan Nation as the French are from the British.
The following is a guide to various terms associated with First Nations peoples, issues and treaties. Please note that individual preferences may vary and should be respected when known.
When unsure, it is polite and appropriate to ask how a person, band or council wishes to be addressed. It is not only good business but good manners.
