Careers FAQ

Getting started

A profile is an online resume that you use to apply for BC Hydro opportunities, now and in the future. It saves you time – once created, all you have to do is maintain and update your profile with work experience, education and contact information. We encourage you to also keep an updated resume in your file and update it on a regular basis to ensure our recruitment team has access to the most up-to-date document.

To ensure you don't miss out on job postings, you can set-up job alerts which will send you an email alerting you when a new position is posted that matches the criteria set out.

To set up job alerts, log in to your account and click the Job Alerts link on the Overview page. Click the Add button and you will see a set of search filters that will allow you to set the criteria for your job alert.

Once you are satisfied with your filters, click Save as Job Alert button and ensure you select how often you want to receive the alert from the drop-down menu. It is recommended that you select "Daily" or "Weekly." You will only receive the alert if you leave the Active box checked. Click Save, and you will be returned to the Job Alerts page which will show a full list of your job alerts.

Applying for a position

You can apply by selecting the desired job posting and then click the Apply button. The application wizard will automatically fill in any fields you’ve already completed in your profile.

You won't be able to apply after the application deadline because the online application for that position will no longer be available.

While late applications will generally not be accepted, you can email our team to explain why you’re applying late.

It's best to answer as many of the online questions that you can. Fields with an * are mandatory and will need to be completed.

Completing the sections of My Profile is optional. When the sections are completed, there can be more flexibility with how your information is reviewed by our recruiters. The preferred method is for you to attach your resume.

When we post a position, our Recruitment Partners are also conducting searches in the system for potential candidates. If your profile is released, your information will be searchable. If we find, based on our searches, that you meet the minimum requirements for the position, we may invite you to apply.

If for some reason you wish not to be contacted with any invitations, you can certainly lock your profile making your information unavailable when searches are performed.

Note that the application wizard will automatically fill in any fields you have already completed in your profile.

Please note that if you are invited to apply for a position, you will still need to submit an application in order to be considered.

A cover letter is optional. However, we recommend including one to help us get to know you better.

To ensure you’re considered for all positions that interest you, we encourage you to apply separately to each job posting.

Yes, you can attach your resume when you create your profile .and release your profile so that your resume will be viewable online.

To ensure you’re considered for positions that interest you, we recommend that you apply for specific job postings as they’re posted.

Shortly after you apply online, you will be sent a system generated message.

Due to the high volumes of applications we receive, we prefer that you use our online application tool where all applications are centralized in our database.

Your application will be reviewed by our team and if you're shortlisted, or if more information is required from you, we'll contact you.

You will be sent an automatic notification once you have submitted your application. To view the ongoing status, log in to your profile and select the Applications line under the Jobs & Applications category of the main page. The statuses will be shown as follows:

  • Draft: You have not completed the application process
  • In Process: Your application has been successfully received and is being reviewed.
  • Rejected: The position has been filled by another applicant
  • To Be Hired: You have been offered and accepted the position

If you are shortlisted for an application, you will be contacted by a BC Hydro recruitment partner using the email address or phone number you provide on your profile. Unfortunately, only those candidates who are shortlisted for a position will be contacted.

When you select Applications, you get an overview of all your applications and what status they are in. Select the one that you want to withdraw and click on the Withdraw/Delete button.

Your application will be kept on file for three years from the date it is last reviewed.

What to expect after I apply

We'll only contact applicants that have been shortlisted. The timeline of the screening process for a job posting tends to vary. This is dependent on a few things, including the number of applications that we receive and the availability of the interview panelists. If you're shortlisted, our team will do our best to reach out to you in a timely manner.

To prepare for an interview at BC Hydro, we recommend taking the time to familiarize yourself who we arewhat we do, and how we're planning for the future. We also recommend reviewing our Service Plan, as well as more specific information relevant to the job you're applying for.

The location of an interview is dependent on where the role is based. Our corporate head office is located in downtown Vancouver at 333 Dunsmuir Street. We also have offices in Burnaby, near Edmonds skytrain station and in Surrey, in addition to offices in each region of the province.

If you're currently residing somewhere that is different from where the position is based, we would look to arrange a telephone or virtual interview with you.

We employ both office and field workers so the dress code may vary depending on what type of role you’re interviewing for. For our corporate offices, our dress code is business casual. For our field workers a less formal attire may be more appropriate if there is a physical assessment. For this type of interview, you’ll be given additional information on what to bring.
