Overview
The Campbell River System is comprised of three power generating stations. Upper Campbell Lake discharges through the 65 MW Strathcona Generating Station (G.S.) into Lower Campbell Lake. Lower Campbell Lake is the headpond for the 47 MW Ladore G.S. Ladore discharges into John Hart Lake, which is the reservoir for the 126 MW John Hart G.S., Upper Campbell Lake is the storage reservoir for all four installations.
The Campbell River has a world famous fishery, and its protection is an important concern to BC Hydro. The river supports spawning grounds for all five species of Pacific Salmon, and both summer and winter runs of Steelhead. Fish viewing/kayak launching platforms and a fishery information kiosk for the public have been installed. Minimum flows and rate of flow velocity changes have been incorporated in the operation of these generating facilities.
Diversion dams have been constructed on the Quinsam River, Salmon River and Heber Creek to supplement the Campbell River system. Each of the diversion dams has a specific impact on the fishery of the river, and the maintenance of minimum flows is required by water licences. Since the issuance of the water licences, however, a major hatchery complex has been built on the Quinsam River. Natural topographic changes have occurred on the Salmon River, permitting the construction of a fish ladder and development of new salmon habitat.
