Image of the Traditionally, utilities educate youth about energy conservation in the classroom. BC Hydro has decided to take an innovative approach to engaging youth in energy conservation by designing a contest called Invent the Future. The goal of the contest is to give youth a voice and to let the public know that BC Hydro is taking a long-term approach towards creating a culture of conservation. Youth tend to be open-minded and ready to embrace new behaviours, and can also influence behaviour and change in their homes.

Inventing the Future

To further engage British Columbia's youth in conservation and sustainability, BC Hydro is inviting individuals between the ages of 13 to 24 to participate in Invent the Future. This online contest provides youth with an opportunity to submit their ideas on conserving energy, creating a sustainable product or adopting a lifestyle change.

"This is a thought provoking contest that helps to bridge the gap between intent and action," said Susanne Lee, Youth Communications Manager at BC Hydro. "The contest also motivates youth to discuss conservation and sustainability with their family and friends."

Contest details

The contest runs from September 8 to November 8. Entries can be submitted by videos up to 60 seconds, or by written essays that are 350 to 500 words in length. Entrants will be judged in two separate age categories: ages 13 to 17 and ages 18 to 24. There are four grand prizes of $2,500, and the winners of the four Voter's Choice Awards will each receive a Flip camcorder. Voting will be open to the public from October 31 to November 15.
