Our Commitment

Affordable, reliable power

Clean, abundant electricity has been, and will continue to be, a key to British Columbia's economic prosperity and our quality of life.

A province built on hydroelectric power

B.C.'s  new Clean Energy Act  is designed to strengthen B.C.’s legislated goal of electricity self-sufficiency by 2016 with a new regulatory framework for long-term electricity planning, commitments to clean and renewable electricity generation, streamlined approval processes, and new measures to promote electricity efficiency and conservation.

The act also includes new measures to promote competitive rates and to ensure that all of the benefits from the province’s heritage assets continue to flow to British Columbians.

In the two decades that followed the creation of BC Hydro in 1961, B.C. undertook some of the most ambitious hydroelectric construction projects in the world. These large-scale dams, notably on the Peace and Columbia rivers, provide an electricity supply to British Columbians that is 90% clean.

As extensive as they are, BC Hydro's hydroelectric assets will not be enough to provide future generations of British Columbians with electricity self-sufficiency if demand continues to grow as projected.

Learn about how BC Hydro is planning to meet B.C.'s future electricity needs.
