Principles

Stakeholder Engagement is an integral part of how BC Hydro will achieve it purpose and long-term goals. Engaging with stakeholders and embracing their contributions is not one person's job – it is something every employee should commit to. These General Principles of Stakeholder Engagement are intended to guide that commitment, and cover aspects of the "who, what, when, how and why" of engagement.

Business Case

Growing interest in stakeholder engagement mirrors other business and social trends. An increasing number of studies are revealing a strong link between corporate social responsibility (including stakeholder engagement) and companies' profitability. The following presents the business case for engaging with stakeholders in today's business environment.

Setting the Tone

All interactions with stakeholders should set the tone with which we build and consistently model our commitment to them. Consider this a "mental checklist" when crafting letters, presentations, or holding conversations with our stakeholders.

General Principles of Stakeholder Engagement

  1. Start involving others early in the process
  2. Set clear expectations with participants
  3. Understand the historical context
  4. Meet commitments and provide follow-up
  5. Understand the values behind peoples' positions
  6. Listen carefully and communicate clearly
  7. Be open and flexible around the process and possible outcomes
