The goal of the BC Hydro business continuity program is to reduce the frequency and severity of losses resulting from business interruptions. The methodology is based on the Business Continuity Institute's Good Practice Guidelines and is risk based. Business impact analyses (BIA) are conducted for significant activities in order to measure the impact of an interruption. Where the interruption to an activity will cause an unacceptable loss, a risk assessment (RA) is then conducted to establish the threats and vulnerabilities to which the activity is exposed. Significant activities include any activity that may have an impact on the safety or reliability of the electric system, this includes all activities that support emergency response and restoration.
Significant business interruption risks are managed by a combination of proactive and reactive controls. Proactive controls are designed to reduce the frequency of loss and reactive controls such as business continuity plans are designed to reduce the severity of losses if they should occur.
Each BC Hydro department with mission critical activities is expected to have a business continuity plan that caters for the loss of workplace, skills, IT systems, vital records, supply chain and materials or spares and tools. Corporate functions such as HR, Communications, Properties and IT have plans to ensure they are able to continue to provide the critical supporting services necessary to run the company. Outsource partners' plans are aligned with our corporate objectives.
