BC Hydro conducts a survey on a yearly basis to measure overall engagement levels within our workforce based on questions related to motivation, resources, alignment and capability. The level of employee engagement is indicative of both employee satisfaction and productivity across the company. Employee Engagement is the mean score (out of five) of the survey questions.

The fiscal 2009 employee engagement score was 3.61 which exceeded our fiscal 2009 planned target of 3.55. The increase in the employee engagement score from 3.32 in fiscal 2008 can partially be attributed to the survey response rate of 83 per cent, which was significantly higher than the 66 per cent response rate in fiscal 2008. The level of our employees’ commitment and favourable perception of their work environment also significantly increased. Pride in the organization showed as a significant factor in the measurement of commitment.

BC Hydro compares its employee engagement results to those published by Work Canada for the Energy/Utilities industry sector.
