Hazardous wastes are materials with hazardous properties that are no longer suitable for their original use. By law, they require special documentation, handling, storage, shipping, and treatment prior to reuse, recycling or disposal. Amounts shipped serve as a proxy for amounts generated. Liquids shipped increased over last year mainly due to two factors: increased shippments of oil to the Oil Management Department and and increase of oily water disposal from the Oil Management Department. Solids shipped decreased over last year in large part because of a process change at the Oil Management Department that eliminated the need to dispose of fuller earth. There were also decreases in the amounts of PCB waste, asbestos & batteries that were sent for disposal. These deacreases were off set in part by an increase of oily contaminated materials going for disposal. Yearly variations in amounts shipped are also due to on-site accumulations and non-routine shipping by facilities. Amounts shown may under-report total amounts due to some direct shipping by individual facilities that were not tallied.
