EN18 Initiatives to Reduce GHG Emissons Make Text Larger Make Text Smaller Print This Page

In 2008, BC Hydro established climate change and conservation as short-term priorities in the Service Plan, and developed GHG emission metrics (reduction targets for overall GHG emissions and for the "carbon neutral government" program) for F2009/10 to 2011/12.

BC Hydro submitted its first Carbon Neutral Action Report to the Province of BC, under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act (GGRTA), highlighting the following actions to achieve carbon neutral goals:

  • Confirmed the scope of carbon neutral program emissions and ensured that BC Hydro has an accurate and timely GHG inventory;
  • Established a Conservation Leadership Team to oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive and integrated approach to reducing both energy demand and GHG emissions;
  • Initiated programs to reduce emissions from the vehicle fleet, buildings and paper use;
  • Conducted an economic analysis of the costs and benefits of a variety of options for reducing carbon neutral program emissions; and
  • Developed a climate change communications strategy and conducted research into barriers/motivators for employee engagement in conservation actions.

BC Hydro continues to identify oprions to reduce emissions from all sources to meet Service Plan targets and regulatory requirements.
