BC Hydro initiated its Water Use Planning program in November 1998. A Water Use Plan (WUP) provides the water management requirements (operational boundaries) for 23 hydrolectric power developments, balancing the environmental, social, and economic values expressed during public consultation. In addition, the WUP defines the programs required to assess the efficacy of the water management requirements and physical work programs. Twenty-three WUPs have been developed and, as of March 31, 2006, the Comptroller of Water Rights has issued Orders for 14 of the 23 plans submitted. Implementation of the remaining WUPs is expected during the next year.
