Hazardous wastes (formerly called Special Wastes in BC) are materials with hazardous properties that are no longer suitable for their original use. By law, they require special documentation, handling, storage, shipping, and treatment prior to reuse, recycling or disposal. Amounts shipped serve as a proxy for amounts generated. Yearly variations in amounts shipped are due to on-site accumulations and non-routine shipping by facilities. Amounts shown may under-report total amounts due to direct shipping by individual facilities that was not tallied. The increase in solids shipped noted in 2001 was due to a single large shipment of contaminated soil. The increase in 2003 is due to a new wastestream produced from adding a new process at the Surrey Oil Operations used to decontaminate PCB-containing fluorescent light ballasts. This resulted in 1,020,630 kilograms of waste tar being generated.
