The Green Power Certificate (GPC) program continues to gain momentum since it began in the fall of 2002. Each certificate sold represents the environmental and social benefits, including emission reductions, from one megawatt-hour of green power generation over and above BC Hydro's corporate energy portfolio commitments. BC Hydro institutional, commercial and industrial customers can purchase GPCs to help them achieve their sustainability targets. In fact, this year, 65 organizations participated in the program and avoided emission of over 16,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas equivalents. These results, due in part to a price reduction, represent a 55 per cent increase over the previous fiscal year. Companies like Wal-Mart, Envision Financial and Hbc have made significant commitments toward GPC purchases. The outlook for GPCs next year remains strong with forecasted growth.
