GRI Index

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a multi-stakeholder process and independent institution whose mission is to develop and disseminate globally applicable Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. These guidelines are for voluntary use by organizations for reporting on the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of their activities, products and services. They present reporting principles and specific content indicators to guide the preparation of organization-level sustainability reports. Over 1000 organizations worldwide now use them to prepare their Annual or Sustainability Reports.

Info - GRI logo imageThe GRI incorporates the active participation of representatives from business, accountancy, investment, environmental, human rights, research and labour organizations from around the world. Started in 1997, GRI became independent in 2002 and is an official collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and has incorporated the UN Global Compact Principles into its Guidelines.

Reporting in alignment with the GRI principles and performance measures has historically contributed to BC Hydro being recognized as a leading sustainability reporter. In F2008, BC Hydro began to transition reporting to align with the new G3 guidelines. The F2009 GRI/BC Hydro Comparative Index now reports in compliance with both the G3 and the new EUSS guidelines. The level of compliance for each of the recommended indicators has been provided based on a self-assessment of the reporting material. Over the next few weeks, BC Hydro plans to have our level of reporting independently verified by the GRI in Amsterdam. Results of this review will be posted on this website when available.
